Southern Trust Home Services encourages safety with natural gas furnaces as fall arrives in southern Virginia

ROANOKE, Va., Oct. 16, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — Southern Trust Home Services, a leading HVAC, plumbing and electrical company in Roanoke owned by Contractor Magazine’s Contractor of the Year winner Ted Puzio, is offering safety advice for southern Virginia residents heating their homes with gas systems this fall and winter.

Up to 75 percent of furnace failures and issues stem from lack of routine maintenance. Not only do many heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) manufacturers require proof of annual maintenance to honor warranty coverage, inspections and tune-ups can identify and correct budding issues that can develop into safety hazards.

“Think of your furnace like a car,” Puzio said. “If you ignore tire pressure and engine maintenance for too long, you can find yourself in a risky—and costly—situation. Take time each year to have a professional inspect your heating system ahead of winter to make sure it’s operating correctly and to preserve your factory warranty.”

Never move or attempt maintenance on a gas appliance. Only licensed and insured professionals should ever disconnect and relocate a gas appliance, such as a furnace, or perform repairs on such an appliance.

“If a gas line is improperly disconnected, for any reason, there’s a risk of a leak,” Puzio said. “If you need to move a furnace or oven, please call a professional. All it takes is one accidental spark to start a fire, or worse. We want safe, warm fall and winter seasons for all in southern Virginia.”

Take steps to prevent carbon monoxide dangers. Carbon monoxide, a colorless and odorless gas that is a byproduct of natural gas furnaces, is usually safely vented out of the system and away from the home. However, cracks in the housing around heat exchangers and blockages in flues can result in the gas entering common areas and posing a threat to occupants.

“All homes should have carbon monoxide detectors in addition to smoke detectors,” Puzio said. “They’re inexpensive and can save lives. Take some time before switching the heat on this fall to make sure the flue is clear and that your heating system can vent properly. Natural gas is a wonderful and efficient resource for home utilities, but take the time each year to consider safety and always call a professional if there’s any doubt.”
