    Earnings Scan: Monster Worldwide, Aetna, MetroPCS Communications

    Monster Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE:MWW) shares soared 5.50% in the pre-market session after the company reported higher than estimated first quarter earnings. Net income climbed to $3.74 million, or 3 cents a share, from $78,000, or 0 cents. The company earned 4 cents a share on an adjusted basis, ahead of analysts’ estimates by 2 cents.  Revenue during the quarter slid 5.90% o $246.1 million from $261.4 million a year earlier.

    The company projects bookings to fall 5% or increase as much as 1 percent in the current quarter. Revenue is projected to fall 4% -8& percent from $259 million in last year’s second quarter

    Aetna Inc. (NYSE:AET) shares slumped 9.25% to $44.80 after the company reported a much lower than estimated first-quarter profit.

    The company posted net income of $511 million, or $1.43 per share, down from a year ago profit of $586 million, or $1.50 per share. On an adjusted basis, the company would have earned $1.34 per share, missing analysts estimates by 6 cents.

    Revenue excluding capital gains grew 6% to $8.86 billion, ahead of analysts’ estimates of $8.61 billion. Aetna reaffirmed its forecast for 2012 adjusted earnings, which exclude capital gains or losses, of about $5 per share. Analysts expect, on average, earnings of $5.15 per share.

    MetroPCS Communications Inc (NYSE:PCS) shares plunged 15.50% after the company posted a lower-than-estimated first quarter earnings.

    The company reported net income of $21 million, or 6 cents per share, down sharply from $56 million, or 15 cents per share, a year ago. Revenue for the quarter grew 7% to $1.27 billion.

    Analysts were estimating the company to report 17 cents per share on revenue of $1.29 billion.

    MetroPCS added 131,654 new subscribers to end the quarter with 9.4 million subscribers, well below analysts’ expectations of add between 236,000 and 400,000 customers.
