(USA) (NYSE:AUY), Barrick Gold Corporation (USA) (NYSE:ABX) and Newmont Mining Corp (NYSE:NEM) closed lower.

Tata Motors Limited (ADR) (NYSE:TTM) extended fall on warning to investors that its net income margin in the three months through December will be slightly lower as compared to the previous two quarters.
Ellie Mae Inc (NYSE:ELLI) was down after William Blair analyst Brandon Dobell downgraded shares of ELLI to Market Perform from Outperform.
Bank of Ireland (ADR) (NYSE:IRE) and Excel Maritime Carriers Ltd (NYSE:EXM) both declined more than 9% while Perion Network Ltd (NASDAQ:PERI) and Cyberonics, Inc. (NASDAQ:CYBX) both lost more than 8%.
Silvercorp Metals Inc. (USA) (NYSE:SVM) faced new 1-year low and was a leading decliner among silver stocks followed by Silver Wheaton Corp. (USA) (NYSE:SLW) and Hecla Mining Company (NYSE:HL).
Quest Diagnostics Inc (NYSE:DGX) trended downward on weak financial results and guidance.
LDK Solar Co., Ltd (ADR) (NYSE:LDK) tumbled 5% after signing a deal to sell $31.1 million worth of its outstanding shares to Fulai Investments Limited. Elsewhere in the solar industry, Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd. (ADR) (NYSE:STP), JA Solar Holdings Co., Ltd. (ADR) (NASDAQ:JASO) and Trina Solar Limited (ADR) (NYSE:TSL) all ended in red.
Synovus Financial Corp. (NYSE:SNV) and First Niagara Financial Group Inc. (NASDAQ:FNFG) both were down after the release of their fourth-quarter 2012 earnings reports.
Senior Housing Properties Trust (NYSE:SNH) lost 3.33% after increased offering of 10 million shares was priced 3.5% lower than the Tuesday’s close.
Turning to active stocks, Arch Coal Inc (NYSE:ACI), Herbalife Ltd. (NYSE:HLF), International Game Technology (NYSE:IGT), Invesco Mortgage Capital Inc (NYSE:IVR), J.C. Penney Company, Inc. (NYSE:JCP), Staples, Inc. (NASDAQ:SPLS) and Eli Lilly & Co. (NYSE:LLY) all traded lower on Wednesday.
Despite scoring new highs, Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ:STX), Delta Air Lines, Inc. (NYSE:DAL) and Research In Motion Limited (USA) (NASDAQ:RIMM) all were unable to end the day in green.
