Top Blue chip Tech Gainer: Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG)

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) is the biggest gainer among the top tech blue chip companies and jumps 2.52% to $626.51.

The search engine giant has came out with another innovation in order to improve its search engine results by offering – the Google Knowledge Graph – with more accurate and relevant results.

Starting today with English language users who are signed in to the site, and expanding soon to all English-language queries, Google will serve up a concise summary box on the right side of the results page with key information on many queries.

The company says there are already 500 million people, places and things that will trigger a Knowledge Graph-based summary box; Google expects the boxes to show up in roughly the same number of queries that now trigger Google Maps in search results.

The Knowledge Graph is the result of a two year project to crawl hundreds of broad based Web sources – Wikpedia, the World CIA Factbook, Google Local, Google Books, Google Shopping and other sites -to create an immense database of things and there various attributes. The current index includes 3.5 billion attributes and connections about 500 million things, and the collection will obviously grow over time.

Jack Menzel, director of product management at Google, said in an interview with Forbes that the idea is simply to get closer to delivering the answers Web searchers are trying to find. “To date, Google, for all the cleverness we’ve built into it, is searching for a random collection of characters, with no intrinsic meaning to them,” he says. The idea with Knowledge Graph, he says, is “to connect the worlds to all the real things in the world. Every THING in the world.” The database doesn’t include everything, but it does include a wide variety of things. Lakes, music albums, architects, roller coasters, cricket teams…it is a very long list.
