US Stocks Fighting Back Tuesday to Hold Modest Gains – AA, JCP, WMT

With little U.S. economic news, investors also wrestled with mixed reports on the health of the global economy. Exports out of Germany fell faster than expected in February. Reports showed that inflation in China was falling; yet stalled growth in the eurozone continues to worry investors.

Alcoa Inc (NYSE:AA) kicked off the unofficial start of earnings season late Monday. The aluminum producer, which beat analysts’ earnings expectations, is often considered a proxy for corporate results since it’s typically the first Dow component to report.

Over the past 10 years, when Alcoa beat earnings estimates, the S&P 500 rose an average 4.4% during the following three months, according to FactSet, which forecast overall earnings growth to contract 0.6%.

Alcoa Inc (NYSE:AA) currently is trading at $8.33 by plunging -0.06 or -0.72% at 1130 on NYSE.

J.C. Penney Company, Inc. (NYSE:JCP) shares tumbled, a day after the company announced that it was replacing its CEO Ron Johnson with his predecessor, Mike Ullman. More than 35 million shares of the retailer had traded by 10:30 a.m. ET — roughly three times the volume traded on an entire day. J.C. Penney Company, Inc. (NYSE:JCP) current share price is $14.21 which is 10.40% down as compared to last day.

The retailer giant Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE:WMT) donates $1.6 million to the Institute of Sustainable Communities to Launch Environmental Health and Safety Academy in Bangladesh. As part of their ongoing commitment to improve fire safety standards in Bangladesh, today Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE:WMT) donated to the Institute of Sustainable Communities (ISC), a U.S. based NGO, to establish the Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Academy in Bangladesh.
