Big Change: 25 Best Stocks to Watch on Wall Street
US stocks ended higher after virtually flat opening on Friday, with the S&P 500 hitting its best close since December 31, 2007, boosted by a stable December jobs report and an unexpected progress in a key index for the service sector.
In corporate news, FreeSeas Inc. (NASDAQ:FREE) was the one to lead percentage gainers after Arctic Securities ASA predicted earnings for ships that haul liquefied gases, cars and oil products will recover in 2013 amid a continued glut of merchant vessels that may incite more bankruptcies.
Three other shipping companies Excel Maritime Carriers Ltd (NYSE:EXM), Eagle Bulk Shipping Inc. (NASDAQ:EGLE) and DryShips Inc. (NASDAQ:DRYS) followed FreeSeas in the top gainers list. All three added at-least 25% on optimistic views about the industry. The Financial Times reported that several private equity and hedge fund managers have been buying up debt and, in some cases, hard assets tied to the distressed shipping industry.
Moreover, Maersk Line, the world’s biggest container shipping company, said demand for trade on the Asia- Europe route is likely to increase until Lunar New Year in February as high Chinese production will lead them to export more.
Uni-Pixel Inc (NDA) (NASDAQ:UNXL) jumped to new high on Friday.
Gevo, Inc. (NASDAQ:GEVO) rallied 19.8% on news of a share-repurchase plan.
SUPERVALU INC. (NYSE:SVU) advanced 13.5% after the Wall Street Journal reported that the company was close to selling some parts to Cerberus Capital Management.
Hemispherx BioPharma, Inc (NYSEAMEX:HEB) after PennyStockInsiders issued insider trading report for the company. Moreover, Rosen Law Firm reminded the company’s investors of important class action deadline.
MBIA Inc. (NYSE:MBI) surged 11.7% after word that documents relating to Bank of America Corp (NYSE:BAC) would be unsealed on the 9th or 10th.
Harvest Natural Resources, Inc. (NYSE:HNR) surpassed 52-week high after the energy company reported an oil strike.
SolarCity Corp (NASDAQ:SCTY) was another top-price gainer after it predicted rooftop solar installations will increase 60 percent in fiscal 2013.
Krispy Kreme Doughnuts (NYSE:KKD) skyrocketed to surpass 1-year high Longbow analysts rated the company’s as buy and believed its recovery is picking up steam.
Sonus Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:SONS) extended rally on Friday after Catharine Trebnick , senior research analyst at Northland Capital Markets, said that Verizon (NYSE:VZ) was adding Sonus’ session border controllers (SBC) to its New York-Boston link in part of a plan to adjust to increased IP traffic. She considered it would be a “mild positive” for Sonus looking ahead.
E-House (China) Holdings Limited (ADR) (NYSE:EJ) gained as China Housing indicated recovery.
US Airways Group, Inc. (NYSE:LCC) was up after The US Airline Pilots Association unanimously backed a key labor proposal made by American Airline pilots, a step that could advance a potential merger of the two carriers. The news sent shares of both Delta Air Lines, Inc. (NYSE:DAL) and United Continental Holdings Inc (NYSE:UAL) to new highs.
Some other noteworthy gainers were USEC Inc. (NYSE:USU), Huntsman Corporation (NYSE:HUN), Transocean LTD (NYSE:RIG), Windstream Corporation (NASDAQ:WIN), regional bank Synovus Financial Corp. (NYSE:SNV), the fabless semiconductor provider of application-specific standard products Marvell Technology Group Ltd. (NASDAQ:MRVL) and Eli Lilly & Co. (NYSE:LLY).
