Pope Benedict XVI is set to resign at the end of this month at the tender age of 85 Years old. A spokesman says that the pope is not resigning due to any health reasons, just that Pope Benedict XVI cannot continue his duties as Pope due to his age.
Benedict XVI is the 265th Pope, a position in which he serves dual roles as Sovereign of the Vatican City State and leader of the Catholic Church. As Pope, he is regarded as the successor of Saint Peter the Apostle.
Benedict XVI was highly regarded as a friendly and well respected individual who brought a lot of positive energy to the Vatican.
Benedict XVI informed his cardinals Monday morning that he would step down at the end of the month as pontificate which came as a massive shock to his peers who regarded the Pope as a permanent pope.
Benedict XVI will be the first pope to step down since 1924 and begs the question, who will take his place as Pope?
Cardinal Marc Ouellet seems to be the most popular candidate. Born and raised in Canada aged 68, he will be the perfect candidate for the current Popes replacement.
