Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) valuation of its infringed patents; a sneak peek of the lawsuit against Samsung

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is said to have offered Samsung a portfolio of its patents at a cost of $ 30 per smartphone and $40 per tablet previously, as revealed in the Apple vs Samsung lawsuit.

The lawsuit had been filed by Apple accusing Samsung to copy patents and features of iPhones for its Galaxy tabs. The lawsuit had been under trial since many months with Apple claiming $2.525 billion of damages in its battle against Samsung Electronics Co over patents for technology used in smartphones and tablets. Apple also demanded ban of sale of Samsung’s product in addition to the monetary claims.

The CEO’s of the two consumer electronic giants have been reported to disagree on the value of the patents held by them in a court discussion. This is the major issue that how to value so-called standard essential patents. These are patents which Samsung agreed to license to competitors on fair and reasonable terms, in exchange for having the technology be adopted as an industry standard. Apple believes those patents should be valued lower due to those dynamics, one of the sources said.

It has been reported that one of the Apple’s expert have testified that a consumer would be willing to pay  $100 for three patented smartphone features that are at issue in its high stakes trial against Samsung Electronics Co Ltd.

Apple patent portfolio director Boris Teksler said that Apple is open to licensing certain categories of patents but it is highly resistant to giving other companies access to technology it deems core to its “unique user experience.”
