FuelCell Energy & Tempur-Pedic International Slump After Earnings (FCEL, TPX)

FuelCell Energy, Inc.(NASDAQ:FCEL) shares slid in the pre-open session as the company reported a higher than estimated second quarter loss.

The company reported net loss of $9.1 million, or $0.06 a share, down from a year ago loss of $29.7 million or $0.24 a share. On an adjusted basis, the company would have lost 10 cents a share.

Total revenue during the quarter fell to $24.2 million compared to $28.6 million in the same period last year. Product sales and revenues in the second quarter were $22.1 million compared to $26.7 million in the prior year quarter, as revenue in the current quarter consisted primarily of fuel cell kits whereas revenue from the second quarter of 2011 included a mix of both complete power plants and fuel cell kits.

Analysts were estimating a loss of 5 cents a share on revenue of $9.30 million.

Shares of FCEL slumped 14 cents or 11.29% to $1.10 in the pre-market session.

Tempur-Pedic International Inc.(NYSE:TPX) is also under selling pressure as the company smashed its first quarter earnings outlook due to increasing competition in North America.

The company projects its second-quarter revenue sales to fall by 3-5% to $1.43 billion on an expected 8% fall in its North American sales.

Now, profit in the quarter is expected to come in at $2.70 a share, well below its earlier guidance of $3.80 to $3.95 a share.

Analysts on average were expecting full-year earnings of $3.93 a share on revenue of $1.64 billion.

Shares of TPX slumped 43.21% to $24.80 in the pre-market session, its new 52-week low.
